Overview of the Worlds Offset Time Zones

While most of the world is familiar with time zones that differ in increments of an hour, there are many places in the world that use offset time zones. These time zones are offset by a half-hour or even fifteen minutes off of the standard twenty four time zones of the world. The twenty four time zones of the world are based on fifteen degree increments of longitude. This is so because the earth takes twenty four hours to rotate and there are 360 degrees of longitude, so 360 divided by 24 equals 15. Thus, in one hour the sun moves across fifteen degrees of longitude. The offset time zones of the world were designed to better coordinate noon as the point in the day when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. India, the worlds second most populous country utilizes an offset time zone. India is a half-hour ahead of Pakistan to the west and a half-hour behind Bangladesh to the east. Iran is a half-hour ahead of its western neighbor Iraq while Afghanistan, just east of Iran, is an hour ahead of Iran but is a half-hour behind neighboring countries such as Turkmenistan and Pakistan. Australias Northern Territory and South Australia are offset in the Australian Central Standard Time zone. These central portions of the country are offset by being a half-hour behind the east (Australian Eastern Standard Time) coast but an hour and a half ahead of the state of Western Australia (Australian Western Standard Time). In Canada, much of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador are in the Newfoundland Standard Time (NST) zone, which is a half-hour ahead of Atlantic Standard Time (AST). The island of Newfoundland and southeastern Labrador are in NST while the remainder of Labrador along with neighboring provinces New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia lie in AST. Venezuelas offset time zone was established by President Hugo Chavez in late 2007. Venezuelas offset time zone makes it a half hour earlier than Guyana to the east and a half hour later than Colombia to the west. One of the most unusual time zone offsets is Nepal, which is fifteen minutes behind neighboring Bangladesh, which is on a standard time zone. Nearby Myanmar (Burma), is a half-hour ahead of Bangladesh but an hour ahead of offset India. The Australian territory of the Cocos Islands shares the time zone of Myanmar. The islands of Marquesas in French Polynesia are also offset and are a half-hour ahead of the rest of French Polynesia. Wireless Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANET) and Wireless Sensor Networks are two similar kinds of wireless technology. A MANET is a self-configuring network the result being an arbitrary topology. There is no fixed infrastructure between the nodes and their only relationship to each other is their proximity to one another. However, that may not be true for sensor networks. Some sensor network protocols specify a specific topology. In the case of IEEE 802.15.4, it allows for two kinds of topologies, a ring topology and a peer to peer topology. Another difference is complexity. The nodes of sensor networks are generally much simpler than in MANETs. Sensor nodes typically include only a transceiver module for communication, a sensor and a microcontroller. This is because of the relatively simpler uses for the sensor such as data collection and gathering. In contrast, nodes of a MANET will generally be more complex, being made up of complete laptops, PDAs or other high level communication devices. A third difference is in the data rates. Sensor networks are generally low data rate systems while MANETs have higher data rates. Bit rates in MANETs like 802.11 are measured in Mbps while those in 802.15.4 and Zigbee are in kbps only. Fourth is power consumption, MANET nodes are designed to be mains powered or only to be reliant on batteries for a short amount of time (generally a few hours). On the other hand, sensor networks will generally use low power components to stretch the power of the battery for weeks or months on end. Lastly, in MANETs, nodes are envisioned to be constantly sending data to one another while in sensor networks, nodes are expected to be in a sleep or quiet mode for most of the time. This is due to the amount of data exchanged in MANETs compared to sensor networks which may only need to throw data to the server on specified times. If we take the example of the ZigBee sensor network protocol, we can see three layers from the OSI model at work in the ZigBee protocol. Essay In this essay, I will be exploring Abigail Williams role in the play, showing how she makes the majority of other characters believe her lies and also stating whether in my view, it is possible to have sympathy for her character. First of all, I think that Abigail is a very manipulative character and this is shown in almost every passage of Arthur Millers writing. He describes her as a very innocent girl who is known by everyone. John Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail and now she wants him all to herself. John Proctor is certain that he wants to stay with his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail is expressed as a character that can get anything she wishes. The way in which she does this is by acting the sweet innocent child that has no knowledge of the world or happenings, when really she is a conniving little cow. In the play, One passage that Abigail Uses is, Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnams dead sisters. And thats all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. Now you-sit up and stop this! This is a very frightening and aggressive piece of writing. This shows that Abigail can be a very scary character, even at the tender age of 17, or around about. The exploration of Abigail Williams role in the play is to be the baddy, and create havoc. If Abigail didnt appear exactly as she does, in my personal view, the story would be horrendous. This is because almost all of the drama and tension is created in resolution to her actions, whether directly or indirectly. Abigails role is to erupt when anything is regaining normalness or anything looks like it will go back to the way it was. Abigail is the spark of a Volcano, because when she says that all of the wives of the men in the town of Salem are witches and she had seen them with the devil when she was brought to it, it causes the whole city to erupt like an exploding, destructive volcano. Abigail says, I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretence Salem was, I never knew the flying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! John, pity me, pity me! She says this in response to John Proctor, who slept with her, only to turn her down and exclaim to her that he does not love her anymore. This is one of the points in the play when it shows that Abigail may have had a reason for what she did. John Proctor knocking her back, gives her a fire in her eyes and heart, to damage and hurt Proctor and his wife. Abigails phrase, put knowledge in my heart! means that she was a virgin before her and John had intercourse. This gives Abigail the reason throughout the story to be so mean and cruel. In a way, it is kind of like Miss Havisham in, Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens. This is because they have both been knocked back by men, their partners or such, and they go on to hate men and be evil people. You can be slightly sympathetic to her because she has been emotionally damaged by the point of Proctor having a sexual relationship with her. It is fine to say that she has been damaged by this experience, but you cannot expect anyone, however religious or forgiving, to forget about people that they love being hanged over crimes that they havent committed. Overall, I believe that up to a certain point in the play, you can sympathise with Abigail, but when she takes it to another level, you cant help but imagine the horror and utter stupidness of Abigail and her pathetic friends.
